Recession: Aquarist calls for investment in aquaculture

An aquarist with Fishful Thinking, Mr Tosin Awomovi, has called for more investment in the aquarium business to promote culture and beat recession in the country.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos, Awomovi said that the business could make Nigeria a tourist destination of choice.

“It is an intermediate between agriculture and tourism so we can tag it aqua-tourism.

“It is like seeing fishes for recreation, seeing fishes for pleasure, therapeutic benefits and for kids that are hypertensive.

“So even for special children also, so now the issue is government needs to look into it.

“Dubai aquarium is a tourism centre; it is something we can also replicate and have it done here.

According to Awomovi, electricity was a major factor that had slowed down the efforts of those seeking to invest in the sector.

“The basic challenge we have is the epileptic power supply. Sometimes we need to make sure that the fishes are in a confined environment.

“So we need to power their aeration and oxidation properly for their survival.’’ (NAN)
