Red Meat Increases Risk of Cancer and Diabetes – Study

1 Min Read

Researchers have revealed that people who eat red meat are exposed to higher risks of cancer and diabetes.

In a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the researchers explained that excessive intake of a sugar called Neu5Gc found in red meat triggers an immune response causing inflammation in humans.

An experiment on mice showed that antibodies fail to block Neu5Gc, perceived as a foreign invader and regular intake of red meat rich in Neu5Gc would cause chronic inflammation, then leading to the activation of cancer cells.

Adults especially those above 65 were advised to limit animal proteins and instead, replace it with proteins from beans and other green vegetables.
