The House of Representatives on Tuesday urged the Police and Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) to regulate conduct of bullion van drivers and their escorts to guarantee safety on Nigerian roads.
The resolution emanated from a unanimous adoption of a motion moved by Rep. Segun Adekola.
Adekola had expressed concern that many motorists had died due to dangerous maneuvering of bullion van and stray bullets from police escort attached to them.
He said that policemen escorting the vans usually took laws into their hands by harassing and intimidating other road users.
According to him, in February, 2017, a painter, Mr Eze Asian, was killed by stray bullets from a police team escorting a bullion van in Port Harcourt, Rivers.
“Incidents of this nature are becoming daily occurrences on the roads with motorists either being shoved off the road or crashed into at times.
“This has resulted in deaths or maiming due to the excessive speed or dangerous maneuvering tactics of the bullion van drivers or stray bullets from their police escort.
“In the process of transporting cash and valuables from one location to the other, policemen escorting the vans take the laws into their hands, harassing, molesting and intimidating other road users.
“These incessant harassment of innocent motorists are reminders of military despotism of years past and must be addressed,’’ the lawmaker said.
The Speaker, Mr Yakubu Dogara, mandated the Committee on Police Affairs and FRSC to look into the matter and ensure implementation.
The committees are to report back within six weeks. (NAN)
