The House of Representatives on Thursday resolved to investigate the failure of Abuja Geographic Information System (AGIS) to process outstanding applications for Certificate of Occupancy in the capital territory.
Consequently, it mandated its Committee on Area Councils and Ancillary Matters to commence the probe immediately.
AGIS is the Accelerated Area Councils and Sectional Title Reinsurance Scheme (AACSTRIS) in the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).
The resolve for the investigation followed a motion on Thursday at plenary by Rep. Olajide Olatubosun (Oyo-APC).
Moving the motion, Olatubosun said that AACSTRIS was established by the FCTA to fast-track the processing of applications for the issuance of certificates of occupancy for land located in area councils.
He, however, said that the unit appeared to have abandoned the process.
He expressed concern that the failure of AACSTRIS had encouraged fraudulent practices often associated with processing of the certificates of occupancy in Abuja.
The lawmaker disclosed that in spite of the failure of AACSTRIS to discharge its mandate effectively, successive FCT administrations had retained the services of the consultant manning the agency.
The motion was unanimously adopted by members when it was put to a voice vote by the Speaker, Mr Yakubu Dogara.
The house, therefore, directed the Committee on Area Councils and Ancillary Matters to investigate activities of AACSTRIS and AGIS and make recommendations within eight weeks. (NAN)
