Generally when  Olympians get medals there are  smiles on their faces, the look of elation and relief that all their efforts were finally crowned with a reward.

But not for North Korean gymnast Ri Se-Gwang who has been dubbed the saddest medal winner after his medal win and almost expressionless face as he showed off his medal to the world.

The two-time world champion defeated Russia’s Denis Albyazin to take the top spot, while Japan’s Kenzo Shirai took bronze. The two other Olympians were all smiles while Ri looked extremely disappointed.

There have been cheeky comments as to why he was frowning most prominent of which is  the prospect of returning to Pyongyang and the control of leader Kim Jong-un.

The North Korean athletes have not had it easy having to be accompanied by North Korean officials to Brazil, on the strict orders of the country’s government. They were also reported to have confiscated Samsung mobiles phones handed out free to competitors due to concerns they would try to contact the outside world.

Not only that, the Athletes have also been banned from visiting tourist attractions or mixing with other athletes at the Games.
