Robert Mugabe flown to Zimbabwe for burial

The remains of the former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe who died in a Singaporean hospital on September 6, 2019, has been flown out of Singapore to his home country in Zimbabwe where he is expected to be buried.

Robert Mugabe had been receiving treatment for an undisclosed ailment when he died in a hospital in Singapore.

A hearse conveying the remains of deceased Mugabe was seen leaving a Singapore funeral home escorted by Police motorbikes, headed for the airport early Wednesday morning.

Mugabe’s body was on a specially chartered flight due to land in his home country of Zimbabwe at 15:00 (13:00 GMT) 

There will be a lying-in-state at Rufaro stadium, in the township of Harare, where he had once taken the oath of office. There will be an official state funeral at the 60-000 seat capacity stadium.

It is still unclear where Mugabe’s body will be buried as there are reports of disagreement between Mugabe’s family and President Mnangagwa’s government.

Robert Mugabe was the President of Zimbabwe since the country gained its Independence in 1980 until he was ousted in 2017.
