Sallah Disaster: Man Dies In Local Brew Drinking Competition

A man has been reported dead in Lagos following a drinking competition held in celebration of the Sallah holiday.

The incident occurred in Orile Iganmu, Lagos state where one of the celebrants and competitors collapsed and died at the drinking spot.

Speaking on the dead drinker’s passing, an eyewitness told Vanguard that the deceased had entered into a competition with some friends on who could consume the largest quantity of local gin called Sepe.

Onyibo, the victim, was reported to have gulped 13 small–sized plastic measurement of the local gin while other contestants pegged their limit at three, four, six and 10 plastics.

Onyibo was said to have started coughing when he was on his 14th container.

Kunle Fagba, an eyewitness said: “He was offered water but he kept coughing and held on to his chest. Before we knew it, he started vomiting blood and then slumped. At that point, everyone was afraid.

“His friends, who earlier contemplated on taking him to the hospital, abandoned him at his mechanic workshop and fled. One of the competitors even fell while running away.

“We were told they had a bet of N5,000 on whoever could finish 20 plastics of sepe. Some of the plastics were bought from local vendors, while they brought some along with them.”
