World Cup Champion Bastian Schweinsteiger has renewed his contract at Major League Soccer club Chicago Fire for the 2018 season, with his main aim winning the MLS trophy.

“I am very happy to sign again with the Chicago Fire, and to continue what we started in 2017.

“Last year was a special moment for my career, but it felt incomplete without a trophy. I look forward to another season with the Fire as we progress to hopefully another level of success,’’ Schweinsteiger said.

The 2014 World Cup winner, former Germany captain and Bayern Munich star Schweinsteiger, 33, came to Chicago in 2017 from Manchester United.

He scored three goals and had six assists in 24 matches as the Fire reached the play-offs where they were ousted by the New York Red Bulls.

Report says the new season starts in March.

Fire general manager Nelson Rodriguez named Schweinsteiger “a proven winner who was an integral part of our success in 2017.

Bastian’s talent combined with his character and qualities off the field are vital to our squad as we continue to build a championship programme. (dpa/NAN)
