‘Seasoned diplomat, patriot, enabler of justice’ – Buhari, Atiku hail Emeka Anyaoku at 90

President Muhammadu Buhari and the presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar have showered encomiums on former Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku at 90.

Anyaoku, who turns 90  today, served as the third Commonwealth Secretary-General from 1990 to 2000.

He also served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs under the Shehu Shagari administration until it was toppled by Buhari’s military regime in December 1983.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina said that the president signed a personally signed letter to the seasoned diplomat and administrator.

“It gives me great joy and delight to warmly rejoice with a seasoned diplomat and administrator, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, on his 90th birthday, January 18, 2023.

“I acknowledge the worthy contributions you have made to the development of the country, starting out as a young Foreign Service Officer, and reaching the pinnacle of your career as Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, through vision and diligence, and consistently projecting Nigeria as a great nation.

“Thank you for your statesmanship, and for using your extensive network of international friends to support the country’s efforts in deepening good governance, democracy and sustainable development.

“As you hit the milestone of 90, we give glory to God for the grace of longevity, in good health and sound mind, and rejoice with you, your family and loved ones.

“Happy birthday,” the letter made available to the media read.

In a statement he personally signed, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar hailed Anyaoku as a seasoned diplomat, patriot and an enabler of justice and democracy in Nigeria and Africa.

Sharing a photo of himself with the nonagenarian, Atiku said, “On behalf of my family and team, I celebrate Chief Emeka Anyaoku, the former Secretary General of the Commonwealth, a seasoned diplomat and patriot, and an enabler of justice and democracy in our country and the African continent on his 90th birthday.

“I wish you more years in good health and vitality.”
