Indications have emerged as to why the Lagos state government may shut down the Oko Oba abattoir in Agege.

According to a report by New Telegraph, the Governor Akinwunmi Ambode administration would soon clamp down on the popular meat market over suspected cases of child prostitution, human parts sales, gambling, among others.

The report quoted a top state government official as saying: “This time, it is indefinite shutdown so as to allow for total overhaul of the market. We want to set that place to high ethical standard of operation, chase those who have turned the market place into a permanent abode. You will find all the Lagos hooligans in that place. In fact, we learnt that sale of human parts is ongoing in that place, as such, the state government can no longer tolerate the many rubbish, gambling and nuisances going on in that place.

“No part of the market will be spared. The traders have really destroyed that market. This time, the demolition will be general; it will extend to the railway side. Police, task force and other necessary agencies will be on standby for duration period of about six months.”
