Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki has called for an emergency meeting of the leadership of the National assembly.

Saraki invited leaders of the lower and upper chambers the National Assembly for the meeting which is scheduled to hold on Tuesday in Abuja.

The emergency meeting comes days after some lawmakers called for the reconvening of the assembly in order to attend to some urgent matters of state.

All principal officers of the Senate and the House of Representatives are expected to attend the meeting.

It will be the first meeting since the National Assembly went on recess two weeks ago, following heated political maneuverings trailing the defections in the parliament.

The defections on the floor of the National assembly caused some uproar and generated a war of words between the major political parties in the country.

There is still massive cross-carpeting going on in various parts of the country which has generated heated discussions and debate regarding the upcoming general elections in 2019.

The leadership of the National Assembly is also expected to meet with Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu.

The Presidency which had been accused of trying to destabilize the National assembly following its reaction to the defections have said that it was not contemplating and would not be a party to anything that would destabilise the National Assembly.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters, Senator Ita Enang, faulted the allegations emanating from certain quarters that the Presidency had planned to get the Senate reconvened illegally in order to facilitate the removal of the Speaker, Dr. Bukola Saraki who defected to the opposition PDP last week.

Ita Enang told reporters that the President would continue to support the parliament because he has a responsibility of ensuring that the executive and the legislature stay in peace.

He further appealed to the lawmakers to reconvene to attend to some of the issues that required their attention, including the 2018 supplementary budget which include the 2019 election budget.

Senator Enang said President Muhammadu Buhari would always do the right thing and would never be in support of raising money in a manner that was contrary to the provisions of the Constitution.

Bukola Saraki had defected to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party last week, joining about 55 senators and 3 governors who dumped the ruling APC for the PDP.
