“Shame On Nigeria” – Fani-Kayode Reacts To Reports Of Arrested Female IPOB Protesters Menstruating On Floor

Former Aviation Minister, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode has condemned the deplorable conditions under which arrested female Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) protesters are being held in Owerri prison.

Fani-Kayode made this known on Friday via his verified Twitter handle.

Termed #Owerri112, the female protesters were arrested in Owerri, Imo State last Friday for embarking on a peaceful protest demanding the whereabouts of leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu.

They were subsequently ordered to be remanded in Owerri Prison until September 3 by Magistrate S.K Durumba.

The continued detention of the women has generated nationwide condemnation, with rights activists and civil society organisations calling for their release.

However, reports say the women have been kept in deplorable conditions and have no access to basic necessities, including menstrual pads and water.

This, they said, has caused some of the women to menstruate on the floor of their cell without water to clean up.

Reacting to the reports, Fani-Kayode said, The detained IPOB women:

“We are menstruating on the floor.”

“We have no access to diapers or water to clean up.”

“We are sleeping with blood and our clothes are filled with blood.”

Even animals deserve better treatment!

The senator representing Kaduna Central senatorial district in the National Assembly, Sen. Shehu Sani, also joined in the call to free the women.

Also taking to his verified Twitter handle, Sani said, “All peaceful protesters must be protected and treated with dignity as citizens exercising their fundamental rights as guaranteed by the constitution of the country. When the constitution is religiously respected,the moral authority of a Government is reinforced.”
