Sheriff vs Makarfi: How Judiciary Saved Nigeria’s Democracy -Ozekhome

1 Min Read

Legal icon, Mike Ozekhome has hailed the judiciary following the verdict on Ali Modu Sheriff and Ahmed Makarfi, saying it has saved the nation’s democracy.

Recall that the Supreme Court had ruled, Wednesday that Ahmed Makarfi is the authentic National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending  months of leadership tussle for the party.

In reaction to the judgment, Ozekhome noted that the country would have slipped to a one-party state if it had gone the other way round.

According to him, the judiciary has again proven to be the last hope of the common man and a critical factor in the country’s young democracy.

“It saved Nigeria’s destructive and annihilating slide into an autocratic and despotic one-party state where absolutism and lack of opposition were already rearing their monstrous visages,” Ozekhome said.

“Once again, the judiciary, the whipping ‘boy’ of our democracy, has risen to the challenge of saving Nigeria’s wobbling and imperilled democracy.

He added that, “A virile opposition constitutes the heart and soul of democracy. The alternative is dictatorship. God bless Nigeria.”
