Shettima: Nigeria is greater than PENGASSAN, Dangote refinery must be protected
Vice-President Kashim Shettima has stressed that Nigeria is bigger than the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), amid the union’s rift with the Dangote Refinery.
Speaking on Monday at the opening of the Nigerian Economic Summit 2025 in Abuja, Shettima emphasized the critical role of the $20 billion, 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery, describing it as a national asset that must be supported at all costs.
“Aliko Dangote is not just an individual, he’s an institution and a leading light in Nigeria’s economic parliament,” Shettima said. “If he had invested $10 billion in Microsoft, Amazon, or Google, he might be worth $70–80 billion today. Instead, he chose to invest in his country, and we owe it to future generations to protect and preserve that investment.”
The vice president called on both labour unions and the private sector to exercise restraint, patriotism, and dialogue in resolving disputes, warning that no single group should hold the nation to ransom over what he described as a “minor labour dispute.”
“Nigeria is greater than PENGASSAN. Nigeria is greater than each and every one of us,” Shettima declared.
