Sokoto bye-election: Police caution politicians against violence

The Commissioner of Police in Sokoto State, Mr Muhammad Abdulkadir on Friday cautioned politicians and the electorate against violence in Kware/Wamakko federal constituency bye election scheduled on Oct. 28.

Abdulkadir told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Sokoto that adequate security arrangements had been made to ensure hitch free bye-election on Saturday.

NAN reports that the bye-election is being conducted following the death of Alhaji Muhammadu Wamakko, the lawmaker representing the constituency in July.

He said that besides positioning two security officers at each polling units, monitoring and surveillance team led by him would be deployed to the area.

Abdulkadir, who is the Chairman of Joint Security Task force on the election, assured electorate of adequate security of lives and property.

He enjoined those planning to disrupt the election to stay away or be prepared to face the wrath of the law.

In his remarks, the Alhaji Ibrahim Zarewa, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), in the state told NAN that 22 political parties fielded candidates for the election.

Zarewa assured stakeholders of transparent, free, fair and acceptable election in accordance with the electoral guidelines.

He said that 1,548 members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) would work at the polling units, adding that adequate logistic arrangements had been made.

The REC assured all parties of level playing ground and urged them and other stakeholders to adhere to the rules and regulations guiding the election.

He said that 179, 032 eligible voters were registered in two local government areas that made the constituency with 22 political wards, 305 polling points and 76 voting points.

Zarewa said that 45, 338 persons had registered in the ongoing Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) to date.

He added that electronic card readers would be used strictly for only permanent voter’s card and cautioned politicians against promoting violence.
