South African Authorities Arrest American Singer For Using Fake Passport

American hip-hop artiste, Dante Smith, popularly known as Mos Def, has been arrested in South Africa and ordered to leave the country for violating immigration laws including using a fake passport.

According to reports, Mos Def was apprehended at the Cape Town International Airport on Thursday.

The rapper, who also goes by the name Yasiin Bey, has reportedly been living in Cape Town for a few years prior to his arrest.

The spokesperson of the country’s Department of Home Affairs, Mayihlome Tshwete, stated that Mos Def has been “charged with usage of fraudulent travel documents”.

The American rapper reportedly produced an unrecognised “world passport” when trying to leave the country on Thursday.

Also, Tshwete said that the matter was “currently before the courts”.

The singer has been ordered to leave the country within 14 days by a South African court and may not be permitted to enter the country again for the next five years, although lawyers said he could appeal for leniency.
