Student loses all funds in UBA account to fraudsters despite following bank’s instructions

A student at the Federal University of Oye, Ekiti State, Anjolaoluwa Jacob, has flayed the United Bank of Africa (UBA) for permitting unauthorised and untraceable deductions from her account.

According to an FIJ report, the student said that the wrongful transactions happened despite her adherence to the bank’s instructions on protecting her account.

She said she first noticed an incident of N5,000 unauthorised deduction from the account after she used a Point-of-Sale (POS) terminal in the last week of May.

Jacob noted that when she reported the incident at the bank, a staffer instructed her to change her Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card to prevent a recurrence and she did.

“But some days later, I discovered someone compromised my account, despite following their instructions,” she said.

She said that her brother sent her N10,000 on June 1 but she did not get any SMS notification of the transaction.

Jacob said she went to a branch of the bank in Ogba, Lagos to complain but a staffer told her after checking up her account that she had no money in it.

She said that she neither received a credit nor debit alert for the transaction.

According to her, there was also no one-time password sent to her that could have been used to authorise an online transaction.

“I was shocked because I never received a credit alert or debit alert, so how did someone else take my money? I did not get a one-time password, but UBA is claiming that someone else took my money,” Jacob said.

“I’ve used a feature phone since my smartphone got damaged in February. How then did this happen?

“I did all they asked me to do about protecting my account, yet it was not enough. Aren’t I supposed to trust my bank? Now, all they are saying is ‘sorry’. They are even saying they cannot refund my money,” she added.

The report stated that the bank did not respond to requests for clarification on the matter.
