The Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven said on Monday that the European Union should not be kept in limbo for too long over Britain’s vote to leave the bloc.
Lofven made this known after a meeting with the four centre-right Swedish opposition parties that support EU membership saying “you can’t wait for too long, and have uncertainty.
“Britain and the EU need to prepare, and I think the EU can begin to prepare for the courses of action that exist so that we are prepared.
“While it was not possible to detail how many days or weeks were reasonable to wait before Britain invokes Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty that opens talks on Brexit, it should not take too long.
“The EU shouldn’t be kept in limbo for too long.
“If Britain has taken this decision, the political leadership has to take responsibility. It is worrying that we have not seen signs of that,” Lofven said.
Karin Enstrom, who represented the opposition conservative Moderate Party, said that the EU has to stick together.
The opposition Centre Party leader, Annie Loof urged the Swedish government to play an active role in the coming talks as Sweden needs to secure good future ties with Britain.
Several cabinet members were also present at the meeting, including Finance Minister Magdalena Andersson and Isabella Lovin and the Minister for international development. (dpa/NAN)
