Nigerian actor Uzor Arukwe has addressed criticism regarding his role in the popular YouTube film “Love in Every Word”. The film, which explores themes of love, responsibility, and financial commitment in relationships, has ignited heated discussions online, especially among male viewers.
Critics argue that Arukwe’s portrayal of a generous, loving ‘Odogwu’—a man who fights for and spends on his woman—is unrealistic. One user on social media called out the actor, accusing him of portraying Anambra men as ‘simps’.
“Anambra men are not simps. Your movie is only liked by ladies who have the illusion of an odogwu that’ll spend his last dime on them,” said the user.
In response, Arukwe defended his character and the film’s message, stating, “Taking care of your woman and spending money on her doesn’t make you a simp. It makes you a responsible man. How else do you show love to your partner if you can’t take care of their needs from the abundance of your wealth?”
The film and Arukwe’s comments have reignited debates about financial responsibility in relationships, with many applauding his stance, while others argue that financial provision should not define love or masculinity.
Reactions:
- “I knew that movie would trigger so many people who treat their partners badly.”
- “The movie triggered a lot of broke, badly raised, irresponsible men.”
- “Stingy men haven’t rested since this movie came out.”
- “Odogwu has spoken! Someone said the rest are still asking, ‘What do you bring to the table?'”
In the movie, Odogwu wasn’t just a spender. He was a good listener, intentional, communicated his feelings, was romantic, and reachable. So, men triggered by his spending, biko, open your eyes to learn other things he did. Many of you don’t do these in relationships.
