A 39-year-old Abuja taxi driver, Gambo Mohammed, who allegedly beat up a policewoman during an argument over cab fare, on Friday appeared in a Karmo Grade I Area Court.
The police charged Mohammed, who lives in Jabi, Abuja, with two counts of criminal force and assault.
The Prosecutor, Mrs Ijeoma Ukagha, told the court that one Insp Grace Damion of 40 Police Mobile Force Abuja reported the incident at the Utako Police Station on March 10.
Ukagha said, at about 7 p.m., the complainant boarded Mohammed taxi from Dunamis Junction to Jabi.
She said the complainant asked the accused how much it would cost for the fare but he did not respond.
The counsel an argument broke out between Mohammed and the complainant and he gave her a blow on the face.
Ukagha said that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 264 of the Penal Code.
The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Judge, Alhaji Inuwa Maiwada, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N50, 000 to with one surety in like sum.
Maiwada ordered that the surety must be at least a GL 08 officer in the Federal Civil Service and must reside within the jurisdiction of the court.
He ordered that the sureties must present appointment letter, utility bill and passport size photographs to the court’s registrar.
Maiwada adjourned the case until April 15 for hearing. (NAN)
