Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming the first female African artist to reach 1 billion streams on Spotify. This historic accomplishment was realized with her hit song “Wait For U,” a collaboration with Future and Drake.
Released in 2022, “Wait For U” samples Tems’ song “Higher” from her debut extended play, For Broken Ears (2020). The track debuted at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, making Tems the first African artist to achieve this feat.
In addition to its commercial success, “Wait For U” received two nominations at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards: Best Rap Song and Best Melodic Rap Performance, winning the latter.
