The world number one had managed to battle through the pain against Denis Kudla to progress to the fourth round, but was unable to continue after having the trainer on against Stan Wawrinka.

Djokovic will not be playing at the Laver Cup this weekend but he did not hide his desire to return this month.

He told Real Time Sports on Monday that the injury he suffered was serious and he still does not know when he will return.

“I would like to tell you when I will be back, but I really do not know exactly,” he said.

“I monitor the results of rehabilitation every day.

“I monitor how the shoulder responds to recovery.

“Unfortunately, the injury was of a more serious nature. It prevented me from continuing the tournament in New York. I’m very sorry.

“It’s one of the four biggest tournaments, especially important in the second part of the season.

“I hope to be on the court in a week or two. For now, in an ideal scenario, the plan is to play Tokyo.

Reports had initially suggested that he would require surgery, fearing that his year could be over.

However, that doesn’t appear to be the case, and if he plays in Tokyo, he will have the chance to put together a good run of form before the ATP Finals towards the end of the year
