The Man Behind the Hero – Stan Lee (1922 – 2018)

Stan Lee was a huge part of my childhood and adulthood as well as millions of others in my generation around the world. As a growing African child, Spider man, the X-Men, and Captain America was a route of escape and education.

Stan Lee would get to shape my thoughts and perception as a child with the ideal that anything was possible in the world of comics and cartoons. This belief would extend outside his comics into the larger society through his movies and his hilarious cameo appearances.

I remember seeing the X-men on the screen for the first time; I still feel a cringe of excitement when I see my comic heroes come to life on the big screen; heroes created by the giant imaginative mind of Stan Lee;  seeing the Avengers assemble for the first time beat my wildest imagination while reading the comic strips as a child.

The Icon known as Stan Lee was indeed a rare gem who touched the lives of millions by blessing us with his gift of imaginative creation. How would the Marvel Universe fare without his creative genius?

Born in 1922 as Stanley Martin Lieber, the man known as Lee to the world was the editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics later becoming its Publisher and Chairman. His innovative creations would transform the small part of a publishing house to a large multimedia corporation.

It is to this inter-generational icon, too exceptional for his time that we owe characters like Spider man, The Incredible Hulk, Doctor Strange, The Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Black Panther, The X-Men, Ant man, Iron Man, Captain America and our favourite on screen god of lighting and thunder, Thor.

Stan Lee’s creations tried to bring a balance to the world and make sense of the evolution always taking place in the moral fabric of the world. He sent messages of Justice, Hope, Faith and belief in one’s self and the power in doing the right thing.

Stan Lee can best be described as the last of the greats, an iconic figure transcending generations and one so magnanimous in sharing his talent with the world.

Farewell Stanley Martin Lieber, you made us laugh, you made us cry, you broke our hearts and put it back together, you gave us hope for a better world. Rest in Power, you remain immortal through the heroes you created.
