The Trump Connection: Why Buhari May Have Spent N168 billion on Fighter Jets Without Approval

2 Min Read

President Muhammad Buhari is at loggerheads with the National Assembly over his decision to spend N 168 billion on fighter jets without approval from the leislatives.

The Presidency has admitted the illegal expenditure and has said it spent the funds in anticipation of the approval from the National Assembly.

Already legislators are calling for the impeachment of the president for the fiscal faux pas.

The calls for impeachment are being supported by a large population of the youth demographic as economic hardship and disregard from the person of the president has tainted almost completely the passion the youth felt for Buhari ahead of the 2015 elections.

Some analysts believe President Buhari hurried to spend the funds due to his upcoming meeting with US President Donald Trump. According to these analysts, Buhari is trying to curry favour with the US president even as the human rights abuses and violations under his leadership reach unprecedented new highs.

According to one analyst who preferred to remain anonymous, ” Buhari knows the flagrant human rights abuses by his government will draw the condemnation of first world leaders like Donald Trump. Also the genocide taking place under his leadership is reminiscent of Rwanda in the 1990s. His only joker is to spend money with the USA in order to get into Trump’s good books.”
