They Stole 50 Goals From my Son- Lopetegui Blames Ronaldo Departure For Madrid Slump

2 Min Read

It is almost inevitable now that Julen Lopetegui will be sacked, it’s more a matter of ‘when’ than a matter of ‘if’

Real Madrid were diabolical against Barcelona and were mercilessly slaughter by, ironically, as Messi-less Barcelona.

Luis Suarez scored a hat trick in the game and there has been talk that it will be Lopetegui’s final game in charge of Madrid.

The Spanish coach’s father, however, feel like they set his son up for failure by failing to buy a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portuguese striker was sold to Juventus over the summer and while Madrid recruited Mariano from Lyon, they did not buy anyone even close to the caliber of the superstar as a replacement.

The father was speaking in an interview and was adamant that his son was robbed of 50 goals

“Cristiano Ronaldo was good,” he began. “Was he cocky? We all have defects, but it turns out he scored 50 goals a season.

“He is missing. You are missing a prominent goalscorer. They haven’t bought one, not a single one.

“There was talk of Neymar and others, but no one came. They have stolen 50 goals from my son!”

Lopetegui’s father did admit that not all Madrid’s failings could be tacked up to Ronaldo but that it was still a significant reason that had to be taken into consideration when looking at the tenure of his son as Madrid boss

“He has to settle with what he has and don’t get me wrong, he is delighted with the players he has,” he added.

“He usually says: ‘I have great people, they give everything they’ve got.’ He doesn’t blame the players.

“But when there is no material, there isn’t. There was but he left.”

Lopetegui started life in Madrid well, winning his first couple of league games before a narrow defeat to Alaves derailed their campaign in a way that they have been unable to recover since.
