Some Abuja-based lawyers have reiterated the need for thorough and proper investigations as panacea that will fast track corruption cases in the country

They spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in separate interviews in Abuja on Friday.

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mr Ahmed Raji, said that most corruption cases were characterized by poor and shoddy investigations.

He suggested that competent prosecutors should be engaged to handle the cases to attain meaningful results.

Raji said that the call by Mr Abubakar Mahmoud (SAN) the President, Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) that the investigation and prosecution should be handled by two separate bodies was germane.

“Let an independent body look at what the investor has done and determine whether there should be prosecution or not,’’ Raji said.

He described as untrue allegations that most senior lawyers frustrate corruption cases with frivolous applications.

Another Lawyer, Mr Olakanmi Olajide, suggested that only principled and disciplined lawyers should handle corruption cases,

He expressed doubt whether corruption could be best handled under the current democratic government.

“I doubt whether democracy can allow the fight against corruption with the quality of lawyers that handle corruption cases at the moment,’’ Olajide said.

He said that corruption was fought thoroughly only under the military regime, especially in countries like Ghana, Ethiopia and Bukina faso.

Also, Mr Paul Erokoro (SAN), advised that the President Muhammadu Buhari to address corruption within its government to avoid future allegations of corruption.

He also urged the NBA to fish out lawyers who engage in sharp practices and punish them.
