Three persons are feared killed when a Volkswagen Audi 80 saloon car with five persons on board plunged into Agbarho River, on East-West Road. All are said to be workers with an oil servicing company in Enerhen, Delta State.

One of the victims is said to be married with four children. It is believed that the accident might have been caused by foggy weather on Saturday morning, even though details are still sketchy as at press time.

A source said that the failure of the contractor handling that section to install an iron barrier after the initial one had broken down was responsible for the straightforward plunge of vehicles into the river.

The victims were said to be on their way to work when the accident occurred.

Officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission and military personnel were at the scene to control traffic and salvage the remains of the vehicle.

According to an eyewitness, the car plunged into the river at 5.30am, and that only two of the five occupants came out alive, leaving the other three still missing six hours after.

Mr. Taiye Akinmola, who claimed to be a brother to one of the victims, said: “My brother was a staff of Python Engineering Company at Enerhen. He left with four staff in his car. I was later called on the phone by one of the survivors that their car plunged into the river.

“As I talk to you, my brother is missing with two others. The caller who is one of the workers said he swam out of the river with another worker, but my brother and two other workers were trapped in the vehicle.”

Divers located the car and brought it ashore at 1:49 pm, but the three others were not in it.
