5 Tips on how to bounce back from an ‘Owambe’ weekend

4 Min Read

Lagosians never miss their ‘OWAMBE’ for the weekend, a typical Lagosian has a party or eight to attend every weekend and has committed to attend by force. They buy all sorts of clothing (asoebi) and souvenir and gift for each party for the souvenir. Don’t even get me started on the things they share at these party as souvenir–they share from Indomie to stove to stove thread, I would not be surprised to see kerosene shared on a D day! Little wonder the entertainment and all the event companies are booming, the groove is endless. Lets take a look at some few tips that will enable us not to collapse at the start of a new week:

To start off, you need to get plenty of sleep on Sunday night

A successful week starts with being well rested. To ensure a good night’s sleep, start “winding down” a few hours before your head hits the pillow. This means no alcohol after dinner, because it will disturb your REM sleep, and no African Magic right before bed, since the blue light from devices “suppresses melatonin, which will cause you to stay awake longer.”

Once you wake up, drink water

You and I know that you must have been trying to show someone that you are really ‘Made of black’ so you will down as much bottles as possible. So, when it comes to counteracting a weekend of drinking, the best recommendation is to hydrate. Days of sun and alcohol can leave you feeling depleted, so consider carrying around a water bottle during the day. It is super important to stay hydrated and drink a lot of water! Water helps to flush out toxins in the body and aid in digestion. Also, adding fresh lemon into water works wonders.

Make sure you have breakfast

Breakfast is THE MOST important meal of the day. Not only is it definitely the best meal of the day (in my opinion), but also it is the kick-start to your metabolism. Breakfast can really set the tone for eating healthy for the rest of the day. Eating a healthy breakfast packed with protein will help you to feel full for a longer period of time. Try get yourself a great breakfast that’ll make you feel energized and ready to kick through the rest of the day.

Work out

Exercise may help activate serotonin—those “feel good chemicals that will help regulate your mood”—and when you’re feeling happier, you’ll make healthier choices (plus, you’ll work off some calories). When sitting down to breakfast, eat mindfully (read: slowly, and with minimal distractions), and cut out processed foods as much as you can throughout the week. Try it.

Expose yourself to sunlight, get back into your normal routine

The experts agree that routines can be both calming and important in getting back on track. As for sunlight…Bright light re-centers the suprachiasmatic nucleaus (SCN)—the part of your brain that controls your internal time clock. Ojile suggests sitting on the porch to read the paper, taking a walk or jog, or even waking up with a bright reading light if it’s cloudy outside. By getting bright light early in the morning, your body will recognize a more stable waking and sleeping pattern after a weekend of staying up late and sleeping in.
