Afrobeats star Tiwa Savage has opened up about why she avoids dating Nigerian men, citing a lack of romance as her main reason.

Speaking in a recent episode of the Thoughts In A Culli podcast, the “Somebody’s Son” singer admitted that while Nigerian men have “swag” and are often generous, they fall short in the romance department.

“Nigerian men do have swag, but they are not really romantic when it comes down to it,” she said. “They know how to splash cash, but I am not looking for that.”

Savage, who was once married to Nigerian music executive Tunji “TeeBillz” Balogun, added that her previous experience may have shaped her views. The couple, who wed in 2013 and divorced in 2018, share a son named Jamal.

In a December 2024 interview, Tiwa spoke candidly about the emotional challenges she faced during their marriage, especially after giving birth. She revealed that she battled postpartum depression and felt unsupported, which eventually contributed to the breakdown of their relationship.

“It was an eye-opener for me and it made me depressed for so long,” she said. “I thought to myself that after doing everything right, I was still attacked. Then I started getting tattoos and wearing short skirts and bikinis. I was just wild.”

Since her breakout hit “Kele Kele Love” in 2010, Tiwa Savage has become one of Nigeria’s most influential music figures, known for her unapologetic persona and boundary-pushing artistry.
