It is no longer news that some South Africans envy Nigerians and that could explain the xenophobic attacks on them even though it is totally inexcusable. Here are top reasons why this breed envy Nigerians;

Music

Nigeria has always topped the charts when it comes to Music in Africa. Nigeria boasts of talented Artistes such as Wizkid, Davido, Tiwa Savage, Burna boy amongst others who have been featured in international collaborations. Little wonder why Beyonce featured six Nigerian Artistes compared to the two South African artistes on her Lion King album.

Language

The official language in Nigeria is English, compared to the eleven official languages in South Africa. Having one national language fosters unity which is translated to good relations with other international communities that share the same lingua franca as Nigeria

Sports

Nigeria is better in football than South Africa.

According to FIFA/Coca-Cola World ranking, Nigeria is placed in 33rd position while South Africa is in the 70th position

South African women are known to love Nigerian men Because They Are More Romantic Than South African men

One of the reasons, as shown in a study conducted by the University of Witwatersrand, is the sexual prowess that Nigerian men possess.

However, most Nigerian men are of the opinion that South African women are drawn to them as a result of the companionship and affection they give.

Here is a collage of South Africa’s biggest star, Bonang Matheba loved up with Nigerian star Artiste D’banj before the relationship turned sour in 2015. Rumour has it, South African star was the one that got dumped

Another study shows that South Africa has the highest rate of femicide, which implies that SA women are either abused by their partners or most likely killed.

In March, a video surfaced online showing SA Artiste Babes Wodumo getting battered by fellow SA star, DJ Mamphintsha

It can be inferred from this that the women will most likely tend towards being with men who would care for them.

Accent

Listening to a South African speak might be torture for some people. Their strong accent makes it difficult if not almost impossible for a non-citizen to understand what they are saying. On the other hand, Nigerians have a very beautiful accent. It could be the reason they get so many music features in international collaborations and also why it’s easy for them to be friends with these foreign stars. Communication is key to good friendship.

Economy

Melanie Verwoerd, a columnist at news24.com has blamed economic pressure as the major trigger for the xenophobic attacks.

“There are many arguments as to why we continue to see this lashing out at fellow Africans, with Nigerians being the major victims. The most common argument being that it is the (growing) economic pressure on poor South Africans. It is true that people across the world tend to be far more generous when times are good. Intolerance quickly appears with an economic downturn, when there is pressure on scarce resources and in particular a lack of employment. So yes, if our economy was performing better it is possible that we might see less of these attacks.” – Melanie Verwood

“Watching these scenes over the last few days and hearing the pain and anxiety of our African brothers and sisters I felt, for the first time since 1994, ashamed of calling myself a South African.”

Melanie Verwood is the former South African Ambassador to Ireland.
