Two Nigerian Women Escape Rape, Hand Suspects To Police In India

Two Nigerian women escaped being molested in the Indian city of Chennai on Tuesday after they fought off their attackers and helped in apprehending them.

The unnamed women, who were said to be students of Loyola college and Madras Christian college, were walking on the road to their nearby apartment when they were accosted by two men who tried to molest them, The Times of India reported.

But instead of panicking, they stood their ground and struggled with the men while raising their voices to call for help.

The continuous screams attracted passersby who came to their aid as the assailants took to their heels.

However, the women joined by a few men that had come to help chased the attackers, overtook and subdued them.

A passing police van was flagged down and the attackers were taken into custody.

Speaking on the incident, Kancheepuram District Superintendent of Police, Santhosh Haidmeni said, “We have the two accused with us and are questioning them; we are waiting for a formal complaint to draft our first information report (FIR).

“The police registered a case against the men under IPC 354 (a): assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty; 323: attack with hands; 294 (b): abusing and 506 (II): criminal intimidation, apart from Section 4 of Tamil Nadu women harassment prevention act.

“A magistrate court is set to send them to jail on Wednesday.”
