Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has expressed concerns over the circumstances surrounding his former club’s penalty shootout defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16.
Liverpool were eliminated at Anfield on Tuesday night after losing to PSG on penalties. The French side’s goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma, emerged as the hero, making crucial saves to deny Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones from the spot.
PSG converted all their penalties, with Desire Doue scoring the decisive kick to secure a place in the quarter-finals for Luis Enrique’s team.
Speaking after the match on CBS Sports, Carragher questioned the fairness of the coin toss before the shootout, suggesting it gave PSG a double advantage.
“One thing I couldn’t work out with the penalties was, obviously, there was a coin toss with Virgil van Dijk and PSG’s captain,” Carragher said.
“PSG must have won it to take the shootout to the other end [away from the Kop], but then they also took the first penalty. So I wasn’t quite sure what happened there.
“Normally, you only get one advantage, and the other team gets to take the first penalty… but PSG deserved to go through.”
Liverpool’s exit marks another disappointing European campaign, while PSG continue their quest for Champions League glory.
