A 45-year-old man, Michael Ugwuanyi, has been arrested in Enugu State for smashing his father and mother’s heads with pestle.

The incident occurred at Mkporogwu village, Iheakpu Awka, in Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area of the state.

In the Saturday incident, the suspect reportedly attacked his mother, Florence Ugwuanyi, who was grinding cassava in the family’s kitchen, with the pestle she was using for the grinding, killing her in the process.

He equally attacked his father, Julius Ugwuanyi with the same pestle for fear he could retaliate over his wife’s death or alert neighbours.

The reason for the attack remains unknown.

A traditional chief in the community, Titus Ugwuoke, confirmed the killings, saying that Ugwuanyi after committing the crimes took his mother’s handset, called and lied to her relations that his parents were purging after eating cooked beans.

However, he said the suspect lied that his parents were taken to a hospital for treatment but did not disclose the hospital’s name.

Ugwuoke, who is the chief security officer in the village, said he got the community’s Neighbourhood Watch to arrest the suspect when he refused to disclose the hospital’s name.

He said it was in the midst of the confusion that the suspect’s paternal uncle discovered the couple’s remains covered in blood-soaked clothes in the kitchen.

“On rushing there, we discovered the lifeless bodies of the suspect’s parents covered with clothes.

“I uncovered the clothes and what I saw was beyond my explanation; it was gory, to say the least. Their brain cells were splashed on the floor,” Vanguard quoted Ugwuoke to have said.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Enugu State Police Command, Daniel Ndukwe confirmed the incident.

He said that Ugwuanyi has been arrested and detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) on the orders of the Commissioner of Police.
