The Student Union of the University of Ibadan has explained that a female postgraduate student in the institution, Azeezat Shomuyiwa was not raped to death as widely circulated.
In a Friday statement signed by its President, Olusegun Akeju, the union stated that Shomuyiwa died after she was hit with a heavy stone.
Recall that the lady, who was said to be seven months pregnant, was found in a pool of her own blood on Friday morning in her rented apartment at Aba Ijefun, Akinyele local government, Ibadan.
“During a visit to the deceased’s residence this afternoon by the Students’ Union leaders, it was confirmed by neighbors that she was hit with heavy stone on the head and no confirmation of any incidence of rape.
“However, investigations are on already by the Nigerian Police force, Oyo state command. The Commissioner of Police in the state also paid a visit to the venue of the incident,” the statement read in part.
Reacting, the Oyo State Police Command confirmed that Shomuyiwa did not die of rape.
“She was smashed with stone and not raped.
“The CP visited them at the Ijefun community today with DC, CID, SA, and EA security.
“Investigation has commenced on the matter,” Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Police command, Mr. Olugbenga Fadeyi, said.
Meanwhile, some of the co-tenants of the deceased have been arrested by the police for investigation.
The incident comes barely a week after a 100-level student of University of Benin, Uwaila Vera Omozuwa, was raped in a church and hit with a fire extinguisher, which eventually claimed her life.
