US Imposes Sanctions on DRC’s Officials

1 Min Read

The US has imposed sanctions on two  senior officials, Maj Gen Gabriel Amisi Kimba and John Numbi, a former senior police official in the Democratic Republic of Congo in what seems like a warning to President Joseph Kabila.

The President announced that the polls would be delayed, which caused the DRC to suffer repeated bouts of unrest.

Last week, 50 people died in clashes between security forces and protesters due to what the opposition groups say is Kabila’s plan to stay in power unlawfully through the indefinite postponement of a vote.

According to the Guardian, opposition leaders plan further street protests despite deaths.

President Joseph Kabila took over as a leader of the DRC less than two weeks after his father, Laurent, was shot in 2001. He was elected President in disputed polls in 2006 and 2011.
