Victony Reveals How 2021 Car Accident Changed His Parents’ View on His Music Career

Nigerian singer Anthony Ebuka Victor, popularly known as Victony, has opened up about how a life-threatening car accident in 2021 shifted his parents’ stance on his pursuit of music.
Speaking during an interview on the Behind The Prestige podcast, the ‘Soweto’ crooner revealed that his parents were initially unsupportive of his decision to pursue a career in music, as they preferred he focused on completing his education and becoming an engineer.
“My parents were not cool with me doing music from the jump. They didn’t tell me to stop, but they weren’t 100% supportive of it,” he said. “They hoped I’d finish school and become an engineer.”

However, the tragic accident in April 2021 marked a turning point. The crash, which claimed one life and left three others injured, drew widespread attention and sympathy from fans and the public. Victony said the overwhelming support he received online helped his parents see how much music meant to him.
“When I had my accident in 2021 and they saw how much impact I had on people—how people on social media were posting things like ‘pray for Victony’—they realised my music career meant a lot to me and just let me do what I wanted,” he said.
Victony first gained mainstream recognition with his feature on Mayorkun’s 2021 hit track Holy Father. He is signed to Mainland Block Party, the label founded by Nigerian music executive Tobi Mohammed.
In previous interviews, the singer has referred to the accident as a “blessing in disguise.” He has also been candid about his recovery journey, disclosing that he has undergone four surgeries since the incident.
