The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that it arrested a total of  2,735 criminal elements in the state, between July and December 2020.

Edward Ajogun, The Commissioner of Police in the State, confirmed this on Thursday.

Ajogun informed newsmen that the arrests were carried out since he came into office.

47 new suspects were paraded, on Thursday, after been arrested for armed robbery, cultism, human trafficking, murder, among others crimes.

While parading the new suspects at the command’s headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta, Ajogun seized the opportunity to brief journalists on the feat achieved in the last six months.

He explained that 113 armed robbers, 227 cultists, 24 kidnappers, 47 rapists and 2,324 other criminals were arrested between July and December 2020.

Ajogun stated that the command secured 45 convictions, with 1,139 suspects currently being prosecuted in law courts all across the state.

He went on to disclose that properties, including vehicles and cash, worth N109million, were recovered from the suspects.

During gun battles with Police operatives in the state, 14 armed robbery suspects were shot dead, Ajogun added.

The command, he said, recovered 57 different kinds of firearms, 82 different types of live ammunitions, as well as 31 vehicles.

12 cultists were among the new suspects paraded.

The cultists were allegedly involved in the cult clash in Ijebu-Ode which claimed 20 lives and left several others injured.

While issuing a warning to criminals to abandon their operations within the state, the Commissioner stated that his men “will not rest” in their bid to rid the state of crime.

“The command will not rest on its oars in the coming year in ensuring adequate security and safety of the people of Ogun state.

“We will continue to clamp down heavily on criminals, most especially those involve in violent crimes such as armed robbery, murder, cultism and kidnapping,” Ajogun said.
