Former Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar has disclosed that a reconciliation committee he headed to bring peace between Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje and deposed Emir, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II submitted its report to President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said that although the president had promised to intervene in the matter, he was unsure if the Number One citizen actually did.

Abdulsalami disclosed this in an interview with the Voice of America Hausa Service on Wednesday.

The Herald can report that the 11-member committee comprised the ex-Head of State, 2 APC governors, and eight others.

He disclosed that the committee met the warring parties on separate occasions in December 2019, before leaving the two of them together to discuss.

“After conclusion of the assignment, we realised that there was amicable resolution to the crisis. Surprisingly, this is what happened at last,” Abdulsalami said while reacting to Monday’s dethronement of Sanusi and banishment to Nasarawa State.

Asked if his committee achieved its aim, the ex-Head of State said, “Well, I can’t say so in view of the latest development. In my view, all the committee’s efforts are wasted.”

Speaking on Buhari’s role in the matter, the ex-Nigerian leader said his committee submitted its report to the president after the conclusion of its exercise.

However, he said he could not say if the president intervened as he had promised to do.

“I can’t really say whether Buhari has a hand in the matter because I am currently not in Nigeria.

“But before I left the country, we submitted our report to him, and he expressed willingness to intervene in the matter in order to have amicable resolution, despite being a constitutional matter. I really don’t know if he had intervened,” Abdulsalami said.

Asked if Buhari’s silence led to the dethronement, he said, “Well, as I have said, I don’t know whether he intervened or not. But if he actually intervened, I will be surprised if we would find ourselves in this situation.”
