US President Donald Trump has reacted to the violent protests and clashes in the city of Minneapolis after a black man died in police custody shortly after being assaulted by white officers.
George Floyd was seen in a video being arrested by four white police officers who pinned him to the ground. One of them stood on George with his knee while he kept saying “I can’t breathe”.
Protests had erupted which turned into arson and looting overnight on Thursday.
Reacting angrily, Trump tweeted that he wouldn’t stand by and let Minneapolis burn.
He threatened to bring in the National Guard to quell the riots if the Mayor, Jacob Frey couldn’t control the situation.
According to Trump, thugs are dishonouring the memory of the murdered man, George Floyd by looting in the name of protests.
He thereafter implied that looters will be shot if caught.
“I can’t stand back & watch this happen to a great American City, Minneapolis. A total lack of leadership. Either the very weak Radical Left Mayor, Jacob Frey, get his act together and bring the City under control, or I will send in the National Guard & get the job done right………These THUGS are dishonoring the memory of George Floyd, and I won’t let that happen. Just spoke to Governor Tim Walz and told him that the Military is with him all the way. Any difficulty and we will assume control but, when the looting starts, the shooting starts. Thank you!”
