Why Angry Protesters Stormed National Assembly

1 Min Read

Scores of protesters on Tuesday morning besieged the National Assembly complex to protest against the proposed suspension of embattled Senator Kabiru Marafa (APC – Zamfara Central) over his alleged unguarded statements against the Upper Chamber and Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki.

Recall that the Senate Committee on Ethics and Public Petitions on Monday commenced a probe into the allegations levelled against the Senator.

The protesters, who were seen with placards of different inscriptions, were also demanding the resignation of the Senate President over the allegation of false declaration of assets levelled against him at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).

They wondered the rationale behind the Senate’s investigation of Marafa, while neglecting the Senate President’s case with the CCT.

Some of the placards carried inscriptions like:  “Suspend Saraki not Marafa”, ” Leave the Senate and face CCT trial”, “Democracy survives on inclusiveness not suspension”, among others.

While the ethics committee met on Monday, Marafa has refused to appear before it to defend himself.
