A Nigerian man, ‘Mide Phillips, has angrily called for the scrapping of all special units and the Nigeria Police Force after alleged arbitrary arrest of his younger brother.
Taking to his Twitter handle, @bantilumbe, on Wednesday, Phillips wrote:
“I don’t know Nigerian Police now collect money from citizens before you can enter into the police station. (Curse word). Nigerian Police should be scrapped.
“So, the Special Anti-Cultism Squad of the Nigerian Police Akure arrested my brother yesterday.
“His crime was because he greeted a friend who he didn’t know the Squad were trailing. They arrested him, slapped him, took him to their station all because he greeted someone he has known from way back.
“They accused him of being a cultist; they didn’t see any sign of that.
“They accused him of being a drug dealer (igbo, codeine and the likes), (but) they didn’t see any sign of that.
“They accused him of being a yahoo boy; they took his phone from him, slapped him, checked through and didn’t see any sign either. They said he’s a smoker and all that stuff.

“When they were through with their check and all after series of slaps, battering and punches, they decided to let him go. That was when an unfortunate one amongst them said, ‘He greeted that other guy, he’s not going to go for free’. He was told to write statement.
“While writing his statement, he said he was being pestered and compelled to write that he was arrested at a drug hideout.
“After several beatings and hitting, he still didn’t succumb to their scheme. He was refused contact to his family not until 6:30pm.
“Someone who had been arrested since 10am was just allowed to call his family 6:30pm.
“My dad got there and were charged 1k entry fee at the gate like its Hip TV‘s Headies Awards. They were asked to drop their phones which they did. And after all said, they were charged 50k for bail.
“Whatever happened to ‘bail is free’. They paid and he was freed at about 8pm but his phones were not released. So they went back there this morning and they only gave one and said they didn’t see the other phone. Unscrupulous element, that’s what they are. Scrap Nigerian Police.
“You arrest people for smoking and selling weed while you are the boss at doing that. Set of criminals that we have Nigerian Police Force. Scrap Special Anti Cultist Squad (SACS). They are thieves and criminals. They pack students for no just cause and extort them.”
