Pioneer Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nuhu Ribadu has explained why the war on corruption may not be won in Nigeria.

He said leadership, institutions and individuals are the key factors in anti-corruption drive in any nation, without which no effort in combating corruption will succeed.

“If things are not done in a right way, cutting corners will continue in the system,” Ribadu said.

The ex-EFCC boss disclosed that 3,800 corruption cases were presently before the courts in Nigeria, noting that the figure represented the highest in the history of fight against corruption globally.

Speaking at a Town Hall meeting organised by MacArthur Foundation in Abuja on Monday, Ribadu lamented that corruption continued to thrive despite the various fora organised to discuss how to find a solution to the menace.

He said the menace of corruption has continued to rob the nation of trillions of naira and stagnate the economy.

He insisted that Nigeria was not making progress in the fight against corruption, despite being the only nation to recover stolen money stashed abroad.

Ribadu also urged the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) and National Orientation Agency (NOA) to contribute more to combating corrupt practices in the country.

He revealed that the EFCC was going to hell to file corruption cases in court.
