Why we cancelled 55th Independence Celebration – Kwara State Govt

Information has emerged as to the reason the government of Kwara State cancelled the 55th Independence Anniversary celebration earlier scheduled to hold today in the state.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, quoting the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Isiaka Gold, the cancellation was due to unfavourable security reports which predicted a possible security breach in the proposed venues and in the state generally if the events went ahead.

In a statement made available to NAN, Alhaji Gold stated that the state government got wind of killer squads that had been drafted to the state from other locations to disrupt proceedings at the venue.

NAN reports that invitations had been sent to dignitaries, the media and other relevant bodies expected at the event which was billed to take place at the Metropolitan Square, Ilorin.

Activities earlier lined up for the day included a rally/parade match pass by school children, voluntary organisations, uniformed youths, para- military organisations and the police.

In their reactions, residents of the state who spoke to NAN about the cancellation noted that the government could have taken the decision to forestall a repetition of the humiliation meted out to prominent individuals in the state at the Eid Praying Ground on Sallah day.
