The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, will on Friday sign a document formally derecognising Sir Celestine Omehia as a former governor of the state.

Special Assistant on Media to the Governor, Kelvin Ebiri disclosed this in a Thursday statement.

Omehia was governor of Rivers from May 29, 2007, to October 25, 2007.

His election was annulled by the Supreme Court, which declared Rotimi Amaechi the rightful winner of the election.

Despite the apex court judgement, Omehia was recognised as a former governor of the state by Governor Wike in 2015, and accorded all entitlements.

However, the Rivers State House of Assembly on Thursday passed a motion derecognising Omehia as a former governor.

“His Excellency Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, the Executive Governor of Rivers State, is to sign the instrument on cancellation of the recognition of Sir Celestine Omehia as a former governor of Rivers State.

“The cancellation of the recognition is sequel to the resolution of the Rivers State House of Assembly adopted on Thursday, 6th October, 2022 to derecognise Sir Celestine Omehia as a former governor of the State.

“The signing will take place in Government House, Port Harcourt on Friday, 7th October, 2022 by 12 noon,” the statement read.
