WIMBLEDON 2013 Women’s Singles: What’s going to happen next?

3 Min Read

The 2013 Wimbledon Tennis tournament has been full of surprises especially in the women’s singles. I for one, like most other tennis enthusiasts, expected an epic ‘catfight’ between Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova in the finals, I also expected a game packed with screams, shots and services of epic capacity. I was shocked to see a lot of upsets this year ; the biggest was probably Maria Sharapova’s loss to Michelle Larcher De Brito (ranked 113th in the world) in the second round.  With that and Azarenka injury after the first round, Serena Williams seemed to be a no brainer. Well that was what I thought untilshe was defeated by Sabine Lichiki in the fourth round. And just when you thought it was safe to make predictions, 2011 French Open Champion Li Na, 2011 Wimbledon Champion Petra Kvitova and 2012 Australian Open finalist Sloane Stevens were all eliminated in the quarter finals.

With all the drama and excitement that have occurred, the last few weeks have been value for money for the neutrals. We are sure to see a first time Grand Slam winner come Saturday and there may be a few surprises awaiting us in the semi-finals. AgnieszkaRadwanska is the only player ranked in the top 10 and she has a lot to prove. She is number four in the world and a 2012 Wimbledon finalist; with all her usual obstacles (better players) out of the way she actually has a chance at success this year. Her experience from last year will definitely aid her in taking her game to the next level but will that be enough to overcome Sabine Lisicki? Time will tell I guess but it would be good to watch. I see this game as the final before the final, whoever comes through victorious will definitely win the title.

All in all, definitely miss the quality and tenacity the top three players in the world bring to the Grandslams but it is still refreshing to see a new face on the podium other than the usual suspects.
