A wedding ceremony between a 38-year-old bride and her 23-year-old groom has generated intense social media buzz in China after it was revealed that the bride paid the groom’s parents approximately N289 million to marry him.
The marriage between the bride, a mother of one, and the groom took place in Qionghai, Hainan and was filmed and uploaded on popular Chinese social media platform Weibo on January 10.
According to reports, the bride, who is just a year younger than the groom’s mother, had fallen pregnant after a romance with the much younger groom and a marriage proposal had followed not too long after.
However, the groom’s parents had expressed disapproval with the relationship because of the 15-year age gap.
To appease the groom’s parents, the bride, a wealthy real estate businesswoman, had doled out a dowry of 660,000 yuan (USD 104,273) in cash, a real estate lot, and a Ferrari sports car, altogether worth an estimated 5,000,000 yuan (USD 789,950), (app. N289 million).
The parents were said to have immediately given their blessings.
“I once again believe in the power of money,” wrote one Weibo user.
“Father: Our boy’s bride is loaded, let’s accept the deal to cash in!” wrote another.
