The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State has criticized Governor Hope Uzodimma’s administration for what it described as the continued poor treatment of civil servants in the state.
In a statement marking Workers’ Day, the party lamented the deteriorating condition of the civil service and accused the state government of failing to uphold the dignity and welfare of its workforce. The statement, signed by PDP State Publicity Secretary Lancelot Obiaku, called for urgent reforms to restore the appeal of public service in Imo.

“Obviously, the pride of civil service is lost in Imo State,” the PDP stated. “Workers are not meeting up with daily economic demands as the State government maintains the culture of negligence and ill treatment against them.”
The party further alleged that the state government has manipulated the national minimum wage structure and failed to implement it in full, especially for senior workers. According to the PDP, civil servants on different grade levels are being paid nearly identical wages, a situation it called “a fraudulent scheme.”
“If a level 5 worker earns N71,000 and a level 12 worker earns N73,000, will you call that payment of minimum wage?” the statement questioned. “The government payrolled workers from Government House. The labour union and various ministries had no input. No one has seen the salary table with which the government is paying salaries.”
The PDP also claimed that the civil service in the state is understaffed and that young people are increasingly unwilling to join due to low pay, unpaid benefits, and lack of career progression.
This comes amid broader national conversations on workers’ welfare and labour rights as states commemorate May Day with various declarations and promises.
