You can’t control kidnapping without punishing offenders – Ojukwu tells govt

The Executive Secretary, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Mr Tony Ojukwu, has called for enforcement of recommended punishment for kidnappers according to extant laws, in order to nip the ugly trend of abductions in the bud.

Ojukwu made the call in a statement signed by Mrs. Fatimah Agwai- Mohammed, Assistant Director, Corporate Affairs and External Linkages of the commission in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that armed men attacked Government Science College Kagara in Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State on Wednesday, abducted 27 students and three teachers.

Ojukwu also called on family members and the affected population to be calm as the government would do all within its powers to rescue the abducted students and their teachers including the families that were abducted.

”The government signed into law, the Safe Schools Declaration( SSD) for children and this is the time to ensure Nigeria fulfill its obligation under the Safe Schools Declaration ” he said.

” Our children must be protected from all forms of harm while enjoying their guaranteed rights to education anywhere. (NAN)
