Zamfara Abduction: Angry Residents Protest, Destroy Vehicles Entering Jangebe

The abduction of hundreds of schoolgirls at the Government Girls Secondary School, Jangebe in Talata-Mafara Local Government Area of Zamfara sent residents of the community into angry protests on Friday.

Residents formed a mob that took to the streets and destroyed vehicles coming into the village.

No fewer than 300 schoolgirls were abducted from the school at 2 a.m. Friday by heavily-armed gunmen.

The residents, women and children, used sticks and stones to attack vehicles, including two vehicles conveying journalists from various media houses including News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), African Independent Television (AIT), Channels Television, and Television Continental (TVC).

A cameraman from an online medium Thunder Blowers was seriously injured in the forehead and was rushed to Gusau, the state capital for treatment.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Abutu Yaro, and the state Commissioner for Security and Home Affairs, Alhaji Abubakar Dauran, appealed to the protesters.

Government officials have yet to make a statement, although there are efforts to sustain peace in the town.
