Senator for Kaduna Central in the 8th Senate, Shehu Sani has described the road to Baga as a “road to hell” following Thursday’s terrorist attack on the convoy of Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum.

Thirty security personnel and civilians have now been confirmed dead in the attack, the second in recent times on the governor’s convoy by the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

A breakdown of the figures showed that 12 policemen, five soldiers, four members of Civilian JTF and nine civilians were killed, Agence France Presse (AFP) reported.

The convoy was said to be taking Internally-Displaced Persons (IDPs) back to the strategic fishing town of Baga at the start of an initiative by the Borno State government to relocate displaced people to their homes when the terrorists attacked.

However, Zulum reportedly escaped the attack as he travelled in a military aircraft, a strategy he has adopted when visiting northern Borno since a previous attack on his convoy in Baga in July 2020.

Taking to Twitter on Sunday, Sani called for the road to Baga to be avoided until adequate security was provided.

“The Road to Baga has become the Road to hell; It must be avoided until there’s adequate security clearance or cover.

“Again, my condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. The education and wellbeing of the Children of the deceased must be adequately taken care of,” Sani said.
